Homeowners used to Google "HVAC repair near me" and scroll through a list of results. Now they're asking ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, and Perplexity, and getting a direct answer back. No list. Just a recommendation.
That's a meaningful shift for home service businesses. Who gets recommended is being decided in a new way. And one of the most interesting dynamics playing out right now involves Reddit.
Reddit is one of the most cited sources in AI search overall. But for home service businesses, its role is more complicated than it first appears. Understanding that nuance is the first step toward making sure your website is doing the work it needs to do in this new environment.
The numbers are striking. According to a Semrush analysis of over 150,000 AI citations across 5,000 keywords, Reddit accounts for roughly 40% of all citations in AI-generated answers, more than Wikipedia, news sites, and government or academic sources combined.
By platform, it breaks down like this: ChatGPT cites Reddit in roughly 13% of its answers, Google AI Mode references it in about 9%, and Perplexity cites it in around 3 to 4% of responses.
AI tools favor Reddit because it's full of real people answering real questions in plain, conversational language. That format aligns naturally with how AI is built to communicate, so it gravitates toward Reddit content when generating answers.
But that citation rate doesn't mean Reddit is recommending local contractors. When it comes to who I should hire, AI treats Reddit very differently than it treats a business website.
Try it yourself. Open ChatGPT and ask: "Who's the best AC repair company in Dallas?" Reddit won't be the source it leans on. There are a few clear reasons for that.
Reddit isn't irrelevant to home services. It just shows up at a different point in the homeowner's journey.
Think about the two kinds of questions a homeowner asks before picking up the phone. First there's the research question: "What's wrong with my AC?" or "Is a tankless water heater actually worth it?" Then there's the hiring question: "Who should I call to fix this?"
Reddit tends to appear in the answers to the first type. Real people sharing real experiences. AI pulls from it because the content is conversational and experiential. But for the hiring question, the one that leads to a booked job, Reddit largely disappears from AI answers.
Reddit influences: what homeowners learn about the problem.
Your website should own: why they should call you to solve it.
The businesses that win in AI search show up at both stages, during the research phase and when the homeowner is ready to hire. That's the opportunity worth focusing on.
Here's where this gets actionable. AI doesn't cite Reddit because Reddit is the best source. It cites Reddit because Reddit answers questions that many business websites don't address directly. The opportunity for your business is to make your website the better answer.
When a home service business' website has a blog titled "Why Your AC Keeps Freezing Up: 7 Causes We See in Houston, TX, Homes," written from real field experience, tied to a specific service area, and published by a licensed business, AI has a genuinely better option than a Reddit thread. And it will use it.
That's the shift worth investing in. Not chasing Reddit, but building a website that's authoritative, locally relevant, and structured in a way that AI can find, read, and cite with confidence.
The question isn't whether Reddit is doing well in AI search. It's whether your website is positioned to be the more trusted, more relevant answer when it matters most.
Based on our ongoing research into AI search behavior, these are the seven content formats that consistently show up in AI-generated answers for home service queries. Building these out is one of the most direct ways to increase your website's visibility in AI search.
The common thread across all seven: write like you're talking to a customer, not filling a page. The more a piece of content sounds like a real expert explaining something clearly, the better it tends to perform with AI.
The more ground your website covers, the more opportunities AI has to cite it. A site that answers the questions homeowners ask before they're ready to call starts to function as a knowledge authority, and that's what AI search rewards.
The goal isn't to hit a specific number. It's to build enough useful, problem-focused content across your service categories that your site becomes the most credible local source available. To achieve this, we recommend daily blogging; frequent updates ensure your site remains a fresh, active resource that AI tools can regularly crawl and cite. The broader and deeper your coverage, the more consistently AI will turn to your site over a forum thread.
You don't have to get there overnight. Starting with a focused set of well-built pages in your most important service category will move the needle. The goal is making sure your site is actively working for you in AI search, not leaving that ground to forums and anonymous threads.
Start with the questions your technicians hear most often on the job. Those are exactly the questions homeowners are typing into AI tools, and the pages most likely to get your business cited.
Reddit's dominance in AI search is real, but it's not the whole story, especially for home service businesses. When a homeowner asks AI who to call for a plumbing emergency or an HVAC replacement, Reddit threads aren't what gets cited. Verified local businesses with real content, real authority, and a well-structured online presence are.
The shift toward AI-powered search is an opportunity to make sure your website is doing the heavy lifting, showing up when homeowners are researching and showing up again when they're ready to hire. That's what great digital strategy looks like in this new environment.
