Why is There Gibberish Writing on My Design?

“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo…” Another question we are commonly asked is “Why is there gibberish writing on my design?” At some point during the design phase, you’ve undoubtedly come across this placeholder text on your website. What is it?

What is "Lorem Ipsum..."?

Simply put, “Lorem Ipsum” (also commonly referred to as “lipsum”) is dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry.

It was created when an unknown printer took a gallery of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book back in the 1500’s. For the past 5+ centuries, it has been recognized as the industry standard.

Fun fact: If you thought it was Latin, you are technically right. It is not completely random.  The word “consectetur” contained in the first sentence traces back all the way to 45BC from a piece of Latin literature.

Why do we Use it?

In the design and print world, it is a well known fact that readers will become distracted by readable content on a layout. The point of using it is that it has a fairly normal distribution of letters. Once our eyes glance at the “Lorem Ipsum” filler text, we sub-consciously know to just skip it over.

When is the Gibberish on my Design Replaced?

Once you approve of the overall look and feel of your webpage, we begin what we call our Content Transfer phase.  This is when all of the “Lorem Ipsum” text and filler images are replaced with meaningful information — YOUR information!
