Differences Between SEO, SEM, SMM, and SMO
In the world of internet marketing, these terms are some of the most common – and important! – to familiarize yourself with. We will discuss in detail what each of these mean and the differences between SEO, SEM, SMM, and SMO. It will be easy to see how all of these tools get your webpage VISIBLE and make you one of the first options when someone enters a search term into Google. More views = more clicks = more phone calls = more customers = more $$ on your bottom line!
Search Engine Optimization. This is following Google’s algorithm, or in other words, its set of “rules” that allow Google to list your near the top of the list when returning search results.
Search Engine Marketing. In addition to SEO to maximize visibility, website owners are able to purchase advertising to have an ad placed at the very top of the search engine results page. This is often referred to as PPC, or pay-per-click.
Social Media Marketing. Just in the way SEO makes search engine results more visible, SMM makes your social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) more visible. The content you add to these pages is able to be found more easily for people who are searching for resources at match your page.
Social Media Optimization. In addition to SMO, you are paying to have ad placement on social media. These are the ads we see as we scroll through Facebook, Instagram, etc.

Think about it. How often do we scroll past the first 10 results on a search engine when we’re looking for something. Pretty much never, right? Google is pretty clear on the criteria it looks for in ranking pages in its search results pages. An excellent marketing team and strategy will cover all of these.
