Competitor Analysis

We often get asked the questions:

Why are my competitors ranking higher than I am? or How can a small business compete with a large company for SEO ranking?

FACT 1: All websites REQUIRE on-page and off page SEO. FACT 2:  Most businesses either have more Time or Money.

The goal is to allocate either some time or money or both to your website's future success.  This investment will eventually pay off no matter how much or how little time or money you choose to invest... the only difference is TIME - how long it will take you. You can spend as little as $50 per month.  You could start working on off-page SEO by starting a link building program, Article Submissions or Directory Listings.  Maybe your site isn't being indexed by Google and that's where you should start.  The first thing to do is to start by completing a Competitor Analysis.

We also hear the comment:

My competitors rank higher than I do and my website is better!

The first goal is to learn how to compare websites, Apples to Apples using real numbers (also know as Key Performance Indicators (KPI's)).  We will help you complete a Competitor Analysis.

First - Create a Spreadsheet with all the Proper KPI's - Click Here for an ExampleCI Web Group | Website Design | Website Development

Second - Go to Google and Find out Where the Top 10 Sites Rank on your First Key Phrase and Enter the Key Phrase and Top 10 Websites into the Spreadsheet.

Third - Repeat the process for Bing and Yahoo (Optional)

Forth - Go to our Website Grader and Grade each website - it will give you all of the following KPI numbers.  Enter them into the Competitor Analysis Spreadsheet.

Here are the Numbers to compare to see what they have vs. what you have.  Here are a list of the KPI's you will be looking for.
  • Website Grade
  • Indexed Pages
  • Time on line (Years/Months)
  • Inbound Links
  • Blog Grade
  • Readability Level - The best is actually Secondary.
  • MOZ / Google Page Rank
  • Last Crawl Date - Frequency of Google Crawlers visiting (which has to do with how often you add new content, blog posts, posts)
  • Traffic Rank (Alexa Traffic Rank)
Once all those line up - if your website ranks higher in all KPI's but you rank lower on Google.  There are other things that can be wrong like being blacklisted. It also could be strictly caused from poor or a-lack-of on-page content, internal page linking, key phrase density, page title match and description relevance.  We would be happy to do a free analysis and review your competitor analysis with you to help you determine what else may be wrong.
